Garmin is now part of a partnership that will see the sports apparel giant and its subsidiary Nike running the first-ever marathon in New Zealand.
The partnership with the New Zealand Government will see Garmin running the event in Auckland on May 25, 2021.
The two companies will use a brand-new, high-speed, ultra-lightweight, multi-pitch, ultra track and training track running platform developed by the New York-based team at Garmin.
It will use the same technology as the company’s ultra-low-speed ultra-endurance shoe, the NOS.
In addition to running in New York, the race will also take place in Melbourne, Sydney and Perth.
Garmin’s new track will be built at the Garmin New Zealand Sports Performance Centre in Waikato.
The company will be using its expertise in training and technology to train a training team to run the event.
“We are delighted to be joining forces with Garmin to run this historic event,” New Zealand’s Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said in a statement.
“Garmin has been a global leader in running technology for decades and the Garms running technology will help us to take New Zealand back to the days when we ran the fastest men’s marathon in the world.
The partnership with Garms is a great example of how Garmin has embraced technology to help our people run better, healthier and happier.”
Garmin, which is based in the US, said in the statement that it is proud to have become a partner with the Government.
“We are proud to be one of the leading innovators and partners in the development of this technology and its future applications,” the company said.
“This partnership builds on Garmin being a world leader in ultra-performance running shoes, which are a key part of Garmins running philosophy.”
Garms New Zealand spokesperson, Matt Poulter, said: “Garmin’s innovative technology is transforming running in the USA, and we are excited to be working with Garman to make this a global event.”
“We look forward to running the Nome Super Marathon in 2021.
We have a very positive relationship with Garmins technology and have worked closely with the company on a number of projects and are excited that we are joining forces on this unique and unique event.”
Garman has been one of New Zealands biggest technology and fashion brands since it was founded in 1971.
The footwear giant was founded on the principles of ‘The People, The Run and the Run’.
